Sustainability & ESG Policy

Ctrl Alt Design is an independent design studio committed to working responsibly and considering the environmental and social impact of the work I produce.

As a small creative business, my approach is based on practical decisions that can reduce unnecessary environmental impact, create work with lasting value, and support responsible and inclusive ways of working.

Sustainable design

I believe good design should have longevity. Wherever possible, I create identities, websites, publications and visual systems that are flexible, adaptable and designed to remain effective over time, reducing the need for unnecessary redesign or replacement.

Sustainability is considered throughout the design process, from the initial concept through to production and delivery.

Print & production

For projects involving print or physical production, I aim to make responsible choices wherever practical. This includes:

  • Considering recycled, FSC-certified and responsibly sourced paper stocks.
  • Working with printers and suppliers that demonstrate responsible environmental practices.
  • Considering print quantities, formats and production methods to minimise unnecessary materials and waste.
  • Designing efficiently to make effective use of paper and other materials.
  • Encouraging local or UK-based production where appropriate to reduce transportation and support local businesses.
  • Avoiding unnecessary physical production where a digital solution can achieve the same objective effectively.

Final production decisions are made in collaboration with clients, taking into account the requirements, budget and practical considerations of each project.

Digital

Digital design also has an environmental impact. I aim to create websites that are efficient, accessible and appropriate to their purpose, avoiding unnecessary complexity where possible.

I also work digitally throughout much of the design and approval process, helping to reduce unnecessary printing, travel and physical proofs.

Accessibility & inclusion

Responsible design extends beyond environmental considerations.

I aim to create clear and accessible communications that can be used by as wide an audience as possible. Accessibility is considered across digital and print projects, including typography, colour, hierarchy, legibility and usability.

As a native Welsh speaker, I also have extensive experience producing Welsh-language and bilingual design. I believe both languages should be considered as an integral part of the design process rather than Welsh being treated as an addition to an English-language design.

Ethical working practices

I aim to conduct my business fairly, transparently and professionally. This includes clear communication with clients and suppliers, fair payment for subcontractors and collaborators, respecting intellectual property, and maintaining appropriate standards of confidentiality and data protection.

Where specialist support is required, I work with trusted independent collaborators and suppliers and seek to build positive, long-term working relationships.

AI Usage

AI-assisted tools are used selectively within my design process, primarily through Adobe software, to support research, exploration and development. These tools may assist with early-stage creative thinking and workflow efficiencies, but I do not use AI image-generation software to create imagery or artwork for final design solutions. All final creative direction, design decisions and finished work are developed and produced by me, ensuring originality, creative integrity and clear authorship throughout.

Continuous improvement

Sustainability and responsible business practices continue to evolve, and I recognise that there is always scope to improve.

I regularly consider how my working practices, suppliers, production choices and design decisions can reduce environmental impact and contribute positively to the organisations and communities I work with.

Rather than treating sustainability as a separate part of the design process, my aim is to make responsible decision-making part of how Ctrl Alt Design works every day.

This policy is reviewed periodically to ensure it continues to reflect the studio’s working practices and opportunities for improvement.
